An Ascot Vale institution, the Happy Apple Grocer has been serving locals with fresh fruit and vegetables for decades. After taking over the neighbouring site, the Grocer’s owners want to expand to meet new commercial opportunities without compromising the Happy Apple’s friendly neighbourhood appeal.
The project brief includes a larger fruit and vegetable area, new point of sale, commercial kitchen and delicatessen, increased refrigerated displays, bottleshop, and space for cooking demonstrations and tastings.
The fitut will showcase the Happy Apple’s quality local produce and reflect the spirit and diversity of the Ascot Vale community.
The crisp palette of natural timber with black and white draws on the local delicatessens established post-war on many of Melbourne’s suburban shopping strips, while the joinery consists of ladder-style frames and tables that can be easily moved to vary the shop’s displays.
